The Fiber Lowdown

Research at Tufts University showed that high fiber intake is associated with a lower BMI (body mass index—a measure of appropriate weight for height) in women. Fat intake can be a risk factor for obesity when it is accompanied by a low-fiber, high-fat diet, researchers note. Though the relationship of fiber intake to BMI did not hold true in men, experts still suggest aiming for the recommended daily intake for fiber (25 grams for women and 38 for men) by eating plenty of whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
