The first U.S. vending machines were built by Thomas Adams Gum Company and sold chewing gum. Cigarettes were once sold in U.S. vending machines yet this practice stopped due to underage buyers. Currently, most U.S. vending machines sell beverages or snacks. Yet, vending machines that sell DVDs, iPods, and other items can now be found in the U.S. In other countries, such as Japan, items sold in vending machines are alcoholic beverages, hot foods, ice cream, and underwear.
