Stress and Eating: A Powerful Pair
Why food choices change as your anxiety rises.
You’re not alone if you don’t eat as well on a rough day. According to a 2007 Stress in America survey by the American Psychological Association, 43% of respondents reported overeating or reaching for unhealthy foods because of stress. Chocolate candy topped the grab list, with ice cream and potato chips close behind.
While turning to food is usually a learned habit, there are also physiological reasons behind it. Fat and sugar taste good, so they may temporarily create a feeling of well-being. Add in some chocolate: The components it contains may affect mood. But this period of pleasure is short-lived, and you may be left feeling guilty.
If you must indulge, choose bite-size pieces of chocolate to limit calories and fat, or reach for prepackaged snacks, such as 100-Calorie Pop Secret Popcorn for portion control when you want a crunch.
