Chewing Gum May Help Curb Snacking
Looking to save a few calories here and there? Consider this trick.
Chew on this: Enjoying a stick of chewing gum between meals may help you feel fuller and eat fewer calories at snack time, according to a recent study out of Scotland and published in the journal
Appetite. The study followed 60 mostly female participants and their snack habits after lunch. Some chewed gum between meals, while others abstained.
The result: Gum chewers reduced their calorie intake by about 35 calories, as compared with those who didn’t chew gum. Gum chewers also reduced snack portion sizes and the desire to eat at one-, two- and three-hour intervals after lunch.
Why does chewing gum help cut cravings and calories? Researchers think that the act of chewing itself may help take the edge off appetite. Chewing gum may also satisfy the need for a flavorful taste experience. Just stick with sugarless varieties to keep teeth healthy.

I had read years ago that chewing gum increased silva production and thus made you retain more water when you swallowed the saliva?

I totally agree with this article. I chew gum at work all day long, and it does help me from snacking. I advise people to chew gum and then you won't snack, and it has to be sugar free.

I used to chew gum from time to time. I would get the large packs of Extra gum. Recently the chewing gum industry has totally redesigned packaging of gum, and I am totally confused. I don't remember what gum I liked, and am a bit chicken trying out the newly packaged gum.
And I've noticed that cereal manufacturers have made all boxes regardless of weight of contents a much smaller size. I did notice though yesterday that Cheerios were in different sizes again when one size was on special. I think consumers would appreciate some previous preparation by ads, etc. that there will be or have been changes and what (perhaps) is the reason for the packaging change.
