100-Calorie Snack Ideas
(4 comments)
Snacks don’t need to take you off track. Try these ideas to refuel for a reasonable calorie count.
It’s 10 A.M. Breakfast has come and gone and lunch is at least two hours away. It just might be time for an energy boost. But what you grab is important. The key to smart snacking is to plan ahead and stock your refrigerator, cupboards, and desk drawers with lower calorie foods that help fill you up and provide some nutrients. Try these snack ideas for 100 calories or less.
- Popcorn is a quick and easy snack and an excellent source of fiber. Pop a batch in your air popper (30 calories per cup) and lightly spritz with spray-on butter for a low-cal flavor boost. Or look for microwave popcorn, such as Pop Secret 100 Calorie Pop in Butter and Kettle Corn flavors. The calories have already been counted for you.
- Whether you peel it like a kid or chomp it like a stick, string cheese is a favorite snack for all ages. This 80-calorie mozzarella stick is also a good source of bone-building calcium.
- Make this on-the-go snack mix for the week using a few simple ingredients you may already have on hand: Mix 4 cups of Cheerios cereal; 2 cups of pretzels, oyster crackers, or popcorn; and 1/2 cup of peanuts, raisins, miniature marshmallows, or candy-coated chocolate candies. Scoop up 1/2 cup (100 calories) for a snack or pack it in your briefcase. Store the remainder in an airtight container. This recipe makes 13 servings of 1/2 cup.
- For a 90-calorie breakfast snack mix, combine 4 cups of Cheerios with 2 cups of French Toast Crunch cereal, 1 cup of cinnamon-raisin bagel chips (broken into bite-size pieces), and 1/2 cup raisins. One serving equals 1/2 cup, so you’ll have plenty of mix left to share and eat throughout the week. Store the remaining mix in an airtight container.
- Hard-boiled eggs make a filling anytime snack. They’re also fast when you make them ahead of time and store chilled. Packed with protein and many other nutrients, a large egg has fewer than 100 calories.
- Dried fruits are a fave because they’re small and easy to carry and store. Read the Nutrition Facts for calories. Because they’re dried, 1/4 cup is equivalent to 1/2 cup of other fruits.
- A cup of strawberries or blackberries crowned with a teaspoon of whipped topping tastes like dessert, but go ahead and snack on it anyway. The sweet combo contains fewer than 100 calories.
- Apples make good snacks because they’re portable, full of soluble fiber, and provide fewer than 100 calories (a medium apple is about 72 calories). If you’re not on the run, serve apple slices with a sprinkling of cinnamon, or dip the slices into low-fat vanilla or fruit-flavored yogurt. To prevent cut apples from turning brown, dip the slices into a mix of lemon juice and water.
- Make fruit kebabs using pineapple chunks, bananas coins, melon cubes, grapes, and berries. Buy precut fruit pieces, such as pineapples and melons, to save time.
- Frozen juice bars of 100% juice make a refreshing snack, even in the middle of a cold snap.
- Other popular and portable veggie snacks—under 100 calories—include broccoli florets, bell pepper strips, and baby carrot sticks. Add 2 tablespoons of hummus for a quick veggie dip (46 calories).

What a great idea. I never read these "mix snacks" before & will try it out as I am very limited on time & make ahead bunches is what I am looking for. If you use lock-N-lock containers the things inside stay as fresh as when you make it. I make salad up for the week, put it in the lock-N-locks, minus dressing, and Fridays is as fresh as the Monday one was.

I am 45 yrs old and fit. I've always been a healthy eater and work out is my passion! But lately just to "manage" my weight, I am finding that I need to change what I eat or else I gain 1-3 pouds. I eat small meals thru out the day. My morning snack are chick peas. Wondering if anyone has ideas of a light healthy snack?
