I love recipes so I signed up and started searching.  I have found some yummy ones.  But I have some suggestions since we are all trying to eat better.  Avoid the following and do some reseach on ways to cook with alternatives.  Instead of white flour try oat flour or spelt.  Avoid completely anything with high fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated oils in them.  You can get more and more products without partially hydrogenated oils now and I think it will soon be the same with high fructose corn syrup.  I use cold pressed oils, mainly olive oil in every recipe that calls for vegetable oil and have never had a problem.  I use apple juice instead of sugar in sweet breads and it works great.  Anyway, their are alternative ways to eat healty.  Just thought I would share a few.      I found your suggestions to be helpful.  Please share more when you can.  I have also learned that margarine isn't healthy.  We should use light butter instead.  Thanks again.

There is also a great PDF file you can download from this site. Go to the recipes tab, and look for the "healthier options" link on the bottom left. It has many healthy substitutions for cooking & eating well.

I agree completely.  I really buckled down and started reading labels and eliminating these ingredients from my family's diet in September of last year.  I was amazed at how many things we could no longer eat!  Then I realized that many of these products were just glorified junk food anyway.  Both my daughter and I have lost a significant amount of weight just from eliminating high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils from our diets.  Of course, we have made other healthy lifestyle changes, but this was a big one because it got rid of a lot of junk.

I agree, you really need to read labels and avoid hugh fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated oils. It's amazing how many produts use these unhealthy useless ingredient. I also use applesauce instead of oil for baking. And buy organic whenever possible.

     Hi Utmom,

Oatflour is available in Health Food stores like Whole Foods, but as the healthy eating movement spreads, I have found that my local grocer has a newly expanded health food isle, and they carry it there.  It's the Bob Mills brand.  You can also grind rolled oats into oat flour if you have a food processor.  Careful of the powder or dust it creates.  I accidentally breathed some in, and coughed for ever!

    Hope this helps!

     Dear Slimscoop,

I once read about , and subsequently tried, an experiment involving margarine.  In the summer time, put a small tub of margarine outside in your garage or somewhere where it can sit undisturbed.  You will notice a couple of things.  Even though it melts, it never goes rancid.  It can not spoil!  Also, no bugs will attempt to eat it, not even flies!  If a fly wont eat it, should you?  I also heard, but don't know if it is true or not, that many of the ingredients in margarine also are used as a base for plastics!  I use light butter, and use half of what a recipe calls for if necessary.  At least butter is natural!

    Best wishes!

    Natalie

I just found this site and I' m so excited about it. I'm sure going to tell all my friends about the eat better america site.

I always use olive oil and I always avoid hydrogenated oils. I have seen spelt and oat flour in the store and was wondering about useing them.  Can you use them to make pancakes, cakes or home made pastas?   I'm very interested in these different flours.

    Thanks, LynnSmile
