I am brand new to this website!  I have been struggling with my weight for the last five years.  Although I understand all the concepts of diet and nutrition it is a huge struggle to follow through.  I am also a nurse and everyday I see the effects of not taking care of ourselves.  The scary part of all of this is patients are getting younger and younger and sicker.

Enough of my rambling.  I love Dr Oz and try to follow his general rule that if sugar, salt, high fructose corn syrup, enriched flour and fat are the first five ingredients to avoid it.  Finding breads t products that don't have enriched flour is a sturggle.  Finding foods that don't have high fructose corn syrup is even worse.  My major frustration is that all but one yogurt in my grocery store has high fructose corn syrup and often times it is not available.  Since I am a working mother I prefer to buy at one store and the economics is also an issue (why is eating right so expensive?).

How does everyone else handle this?????

High Fructose Corn Syrup drives me nuts also. I try to read labels of things before I put them in my basket- and I can't tell you how many things I've put back on the shelf after seeing it.

Hmmm- do you have peapod in your area? Also, I would talk to the manager directly. Let them know you really buy this product on a weekly basis and maybe they will order more of the product if it's that much in demand.

    Good luck! :)

Maybe I'm a bit out of fashion but has anyone considered baking their own bread?  Substitute enriched flour for whole wheat flour (unless you have wheat allergies) ... I've found that since I've been on this site it's not so much more expensive if you are willing to work a little harder to get what you want..without sacrificing taste.  Some things I believe are a little silly...I know organic is the "in" thing to do these days but when you are talking about feeding a house full of people some things you just can't substitute without paying out the wazoo!  So, frozen veggies in a bag at Wal-Mart is much less expensive than buying organic frozen veggies or fresh veggies...only buy fruit that is in season (you pay less that way) ...my husband and I have some veggie plants growing (we live in Florida..I know, I know the envy of the Northeasterners is being felt right now) we are growing bell pepper plants (all colors) and tomatoes (Roma and some other kind) ...we bought the peppers and tomatoes from Publix grocery store and dried the seeds ourselves and planted them..when they start giving fruit it will be a wonderful day! :)

I just wanted to say for Yogurt it is really healthy to eat plan yogurt and add fruit.  It will taste tart but if you put a tablespoon of Pure maple syrup in it it tastes just like the yogurt with the high fructose corn syrup, but it is natural.  It is also better to buy yogurt with fat instead of the low fat kinds.  the fat in yogurt is good fat and is important to your cells and brain. When you buy low fat items they are replacing the fat with chemicals that can be toxic to your cells.  I can't help with the cost problem.  I have the same trouble, but you just have to decide what is important to you. i try to buy organic, but when I'm having money trouble I don't.

yeah I kinda of agree with all the posts here and just would add that cost is important, I know we struggle each week keeping in our budget, but we tend to forget long term cost.  Our health is ultimately effected when we eat foods like High Fructose Corn syrup, and other unnatural, chemically based foods, and our bodies will not work as long as good without many many trips to the doctors office, and specialists etc.  Which will end up costing us in the end.  I work and try very hard to prepare meals in advance, eat foods in seasons, and bake my own bread, cook homemade foods, all so that I avoid all the additives, and unnatural ingredients in prepared foods.  I can attest that my health has been postively effected, and I spend less time at drs which means less money on gas, less money on co pays, and less money on medicines.  I am not sick as much, so I am more productive at work and I could go on and on about the benefits of paying slightly more for food vs what you pay in the long run when you don't eat healthy.   Also, depending on where you live, I go to grocer outlets.  Amelias for instance actually stocks alot of organic products so I pay normal price for food but it is organic and has less 'bad' stuff in it.    I hope you find the balance that works for your family.
