Because of the bisphenol-A (BPA) in the lining of canned goods, I have stopped buying canned goods.  It hasn't been easy either.  I have been using this site more and more for recipes and just wanted to put the suggestion out there.  Thanks!

Anyone else learning to cook without the use of canned items?

I thought BPA in canned goods was only a concern in acidic foods, such as tomatoes.  I finally found boxed tomatoes at The Fresh Market, at a premium, of course, and only a few boxes left on the shelf.

I still cook with canned foods, but have been using more frozen and fresh whenever possible.  My kids won't eat frozen cooked green beans, for example, but will eat the mushy canned kind.

And dont forget the crazy amount of sodium that is in canned foods. So last night my husband wanted creamy mushroom soup, so instead of the high sodium, high fat canned types I made soup from scratch in about 10 minutes. Super easy and you know exactaly what is in it..Idea

I still buy some canned foods, but try to avoid canned tomato products. I buy marinara sauce in a jar to keep in the pantry, but otherwise I try to use fresh - make fresh. Also, I use public transportation so I have to consider weight and bulk. Most veggies I buy frozen in the winter and use in recipes with little adjustment. Lately, I have fallen in love with Roma tomatoes. They are WAY cheaper than other fresh tomato-types - in my store a dollar or more less a pound. They are firm - so I can carry them without mushing - and tasty in every way I use tomatoes.
