Cedric Bryant, PhD Responds:
Cedric Bryant, PhD, chief exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise, responds: It depends on your goals. Whichever you do first, you'll do best when your body is fresh. So if you want to increase strength, strength training should come first. To boost aerobic performance, focus first on your cardio workout. Keep in mind, though, that you need both types of exercise for overall health and fitness, because each type of activity offers its own benefits. If you think of your body as a car, your muscles are the engine providing the power that allows you to move and function. Your cardiovascular system is the fuel pump that provides your body with the fuel it needs to power that engine. Your car doesn't work well with a poorly functioning engine or at all with a broken fuel pump.
