Dawn Jackson Blatner, Responds:
It’s a myth! Although there are low-calorie foods—a stalk of celery has about 6 calories—no food causes you to burn calories or lose weight by eating it. Part of the myth comes from a fact, though: You may burn up to 10% of your daily calorie intake during the digestive process. For example, if you eat 1,500 calories in a day, 150 of those calories will be burned just by digesting food. One preliminary study suggested that certain beverages may help burn additional calories, but the study wasn’t conclusive and didn’t include many participants. Bottom line: There’s no magic drink or food. You have to increase exercise and reduce overall calories to lose weight.
