Declan Connolly, PhD Responds:

Declan Connolly, PhD, an associate professor and director of the University of Vermont Human Performance Laboratory, responds: If you bike to work, you have to be organized. You'll need to carry clean clothes with you or leave some at work. Pick a route that gives you 30 to 40 minutes on the bike, has fairly consistent terrain, and is light on traffic. Also, think about the time of day you'll be riding and if, for example, you will need a bike light. Wear a helmet, and reflective clothing. Ride on the road and obey traffic signals as you would when driving your car. Do not wear headphones, and always remain alert.

The key to both short-term and long-term weight loss is the right balance of exercise and calorie intake. From an exercise perspective, "go long and slow." Go for as long as you can at a slow to moderate speed. Often, people trying to lose weight exercise too hard. Here's a simple little gauge of intensity: You should always be able to breathe comfortably with your mouth shut (breathing through your nose) as you exercise to be at a good intensity to help with weight loss goals.
