Question.
Miriam E. Nelson, Ph.D Responds:

Miriam E. Nelson, PhD, of Tufts University and the best-selling author of the Strong Women book series, responds: A balanced, sensible weight-loss program should involve both moderate dietary changes, such as reducing intake of calories and fat, as well as a gradual increase in daily physical activity. In terms of seeing physical results in your physique, clinical studies show that significant changes can occur within as few as 10 weeks. In addition to enjoying a loss of pounds on the scale, sticking with a moderate diet and exercise program may also help you shift your body composition to less body fat and more muscle.

If you take circumference measurements at several places on your body, such as your hips, thighs, and waist, you're likely to see small but noticeable decreases in you body's actual size. Collectively or independently, the loss in weight and circumference, and the shift in body composition all mean looking leaner and trimmer in your favorite clothes and swimsuit.
