How do I keep a fitness log?

Question.
Neal Pire, MA, CSCS Responds:

Neal Pire, MA, CSCS, director of the Sports Training Academy in Bergen County, New Jersey, responds: A log is an excellent way to chart your progress and provide motivation. You can use a calendar, a daily journal, a computer diary, or a simple notepad. The key is to select a log that fits your needs in which you record information that's meaningful to you. Some tracking tips:

  • Nail down the numbers, and track your total minutes of exercise or total distance (in miles or meters) when you are cycling, walking, running, or swimming. If you're strength training, try taking the total number of repetitions and multiplying that by the pounds lifted for each exercise. Just don't make it too difficult to calculate or track.
  • Consider a monitoring gadget--a pedometer, heart-rate monitor, bike odometer, or stopwatch--to track your progress.
  • Remember diet, which you can track in the same, or a separate, journal.
  • Go high-tech by visiting the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports free online log for adults, seniors, and youth at www.presidentschallenge.org.
