How can I stay cool on walks when the weather is hot?

Question.
Debi Pillarella, MEd Responds:

Think light, walk early or late, cover up, and make water your friend.
  • Wear light-colored clothing that's loose fitting, lightweight, and breathable.
  • Walk during the cooler parts of the day (early morning or evening); avoid walking between 10 A.M. and 2:30 P.M.
  • Cover up by lathering on the sunscreen, and wear a cap or visor. Sunburn hinders your body's ability to stay cool.
  • Drink often and soon, because feeling thirsty is an indication that you've already reached a state of dehydration. You need to drink before you feel the need. Water is the preferred drink before, during, and after your walk. You can also carry a water spritzer filled with cool water, and spray yourself often.
If you have a medical condition such as asthma or heart disease, or if you're pregnant, watch ozone advisories and heat indexes. If a health advisory is issued, your best bet is to stay indoors. If the temperature is above 90°F and the humidity level is above 60%, even healthy individuals should skip outdoor walks for the day.
