Question.
Merville C. Marshall, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E Responds:

Merville C. Marshall Jr., founder and president of the Endocrine Institute in White Plains, New York, responds: Exercise is smart for those with diabetes—it helps to improve glucose control and also may help lower the cost of health care. And when you exercise, just a few precautions can help. Guidelines from the American Diabetes Association include:

  • Always wear comfortable shoes.
  • Keep your feet dry.
  • Watch for any signs of blisters on the feet.
  • Make sure the surface you are exercising on is even and free of debris and holes.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated.
  • Remember to stretch, warm up, and cool down. If you have any of the complications of diabetes, such as eye or neurological problems, consult your doctor before starting an exercise program. And even if you don't, check in with your doctor regularly to be sure your medications are working right for you—even as you increase your activity level. Finally, find an exercise that you enjoy, because you'll be more likely to continue it. The greatest benefits are found when you exercise regularly.
