Tune In or Turn Off?
Discover music's effect on healthy habits.
Does your life have a constant sound track? Music can help power up some healthy habits…and wreak havoc on others.
When you exercise…tune in! Music can help distract you so you feel like you're exerting yourself less during workouts, according to a recent study published in the
Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness. Previous research has shown that a peppy playlist may help to improve exercise performance.
When you eat…turn it off! In a recent study of Georgia State University students, researchers found that those who listened to music ate a whopping
15% more calories and 19% more fat than those who dined in silence—whether they were overweight or not. They also stayed at the table for 30% longer. Surprisingly, the rhythm and volume didn't seem to affect intake. Just the background of music was enough to keep their forks moving.
