The Best Life Diet is a best-selling book by exercise physiologist (and Oprah’s exercise guru) Bob Greene. It’s based on the premise that people are most likely to lose weight and keep it off when changes are gradual. The slower pace gives new habits time to take root and grow, as old habits fade away.

The diet is divided into three phases. The first phase is designed to help you rev up your metabolism by making small changes such as exercising more, staying hydrated, eating breakfast, and avoiding food two hours before bedtime. It also prepares you mentally for making deeper diet and exercise changes.

In phase two, you’re asked to examine the physical and emotional reasons for your hunger, work on portion control, temporarily avoid six foods that are classic weight-loss busters, plus exercise more.

The third and final phase focuses on making lifestyle decisions about how you want to eat and stay active for the “best life” you can live.

Many foods now carry the Best Life Diet seal, which means they’ve met nutrition standards set by the Best Life Diet.
