Patricia Bannan, MS Responds:
Patricia Bannan, MS, RD, a member of the advisory board of the Center for Nutrition Communication at Tufts University, responds: With so many tempting choices and no access to nutrition labels, it's tough to make a nutritious selection while standing in front of a vending machine. What to do?
Have some healthful options in mind before you put in your coins. In most cases, you're safe by choosing a bag of nuts. Nuts are a source of protein, dietary fiber, and healthy (monounsaturated) fat. Even the salted version has less sodium than many snack possibilities. Other smart choices: a granola bar made with whole grain, low-fat popcorn, and pretzels. Whichever of these you select, look for a snack-size package—enough to satisfy your appetite without blowing your diet. If you're also making a beverage selection, go with bottled water. Or, if you're lucky enough to find a machine with lots of options, choose low-fat or fat-free milk.
