Elizabeth Somer, MS, RD Responds:
Elizabeth Somer, MS, RD, nutrition advisor to Prevention magazine responds: Taking a multi is a smart idea for some people. Multivitamins fill the gaps when our diets are lacking key vitamins and minerals. Of course, a supplement can’t replace all the nutrients found in food. And even if you eat a well-rounded diet, it’s likely that you’ll have a few nutritional shortfalls—and taking a daily multivitamin can help eliminate them. In general, look for a brand that supplies 100% of the Daily Value for a broad range of vitamins and minerals. But it’s a good idea to talk with your doctor about choosing and using the right multi for you.
