Chinese cuisine looks healthy because of the variety of vegetables in the dishes. But appearances can be deceiving in some cases. Follow these tips to enjoy a delicious meal that's better for you.
- Split portions; share with a friend or save half for later.
- Add a side dish of steamed vegetables to your entrée.
- Ask your server for dry-wok (no oil) preparation or healthy menu suggestions.
- Make vegetables and grains the majority of the dish. Look for beans, peas, tofu, sprouts, broccoli, spinach, peppers, Chinese mushrooms, black fungus, and seaweed.
- Cut down on sodium by choosing restaurants that skip the MSG, or ask that it be omitted from the dishes you order. Also, go easy on the soy sauce.
- Use chopsticks; it will take longer to eat and you will eat less.
- Ask for fewer nuts—stick with 2 to 3 tablespoons per dish.
- Skip the deep fried options to keep fat and calories down.
