I saw a report that a typical meal at a Chinese restaurant can be very high in sodium, fat, and calories. What are some smart Chinese food choices?

Chinese cuisine looks healthy because of the variety of vegetables in the dishes. But appearances can be deceiving in some cases. Follow these tips to enjoy a delicious meal that's better for you.
  • Split portions; share with a friend or save half for later.
  • Add a side dish of steamed vegetables to your entrée.
  • Ask your server for dry-wok (no oil) preparation or healthy menu suggestions.
  • Make vegetables and grains the majority of the dish. Look for beans, peas, tofu, sprouts, broccoli, spinach, peppers, Chinese mushrooms, black fungus, and seaweed.
  • Cut down on sodium by choosing restaurants that skip the MSG, or ask that it be omitted from the dishes you order. Also, go easy on the soy sauce.
  • Use chopsticks; it will take longer to eat and you will eat less.
  • Ask for fewer nuts—stick with 2 to 3 tablespoons per dish.
  • Skip the deep fried options to keep fat and calories down.
