Miriam E. Nelson, Ph.D Responds:
Miriam E. Nelson, PhD, of Tufts University, and the best-selling author of the Strong Women book series, responds: The good news is walking before, during, and after work all count toward your exercise goals. Walking is an ideal aerobic exercise, because it can easily fit into your day and doesn't require any special training or equipment—other than a good pair of walking shoes. Another plus: Walking 1 mile will burn about 100 calories.
Measure your work-time walking with a pedometer. Your daily goal should be to walk 10,000 steps. If you are not there yet, work up to that level by slowly increasing your pace and number of steps. Wherever you walk, make sure it's a safe environment, maintain good posture, swing your arms comfortably, and let your heel strike the ground first with each step. The best fitness-walking plan combines those 10,000 steps a day with a strength-training program at least twice a week.
