Merville C. Marshall, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E Responds:
Merville C. Marshall Jr., MD, FACP, FACE, founder and president of the Endocrine Institute, in White Plains, New York, responds: You're absolutely correct in that a team effort is optimal in the management of diabetes.
A primary care physician or endocrinologist typically is the team leader, and will be responsible for your care and for referrals to other professionals. Endocrinologists are especially important for insulin-pump therapy and for managing diabetes during pregnancy.
A dietitian and certified diabetes educators are very helpful for dietary recommendations and general instructions.
An ophthalmologist should be visited annually for an annual eye exam by anyone with diabetes.
A podiatrist needs to examine those who have foot problems and diminished sensation in their toes.
Additional specialists may be necessary, if complications arise.
Finally, you are part of the team. Diabetes management works best when there is a cooperative effort by both health-care professionals and patients.
