Question.
Merville C. Marshall, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E Responds:

Merville C. Marshall Jr., MD, FACP, FACE, founder and president of the Endocrine Institute, in White Plains, New York, responds: You're absolutely correct in that a team effort is optimal in the management of diabetes.

  • A primary care physician or endocrinologist typically is the team leader, and will be responsible for your care and for referrals to other professionals. Endocrinologists are especially important for insulin-pump therapy and for managing diabetes during pregnancy.
  • A dietitian and certified diabetes educators are very helpful for dietary recommendations and general instructions.
  • An ophthalmologist should be visited annually for an annual eye exam by anyone with diabetes.
  • A podiatrist needs to examine those who have foot problems and diminished sensation in their toes.
  • Additional specialists may be necessary, if complications arise.
  • Finally, you are part of the team. Diabetes management works best when there is a cooperative effort by both health-care professionals and patients.
